Through my job I've met a lot of people over the years who were in prison, or who had previously spent a lot of time in prison. Many of these people were in extremely good physical shape, especially those who had spent time in the most rigorous maximum security institutions. Although it makes sense that they would have had a lot of spare time to work out, what I always found curious was that the huge nutritional deficits they faced didn't impede them. People in jail would always complain that they felt hungry all the time because food was insufficient. Even when there was food, it would invariably be of the poorest quality. Yet some of these people developed Superman-like physiques after years behind bars. This leads me to think as human beings in conditions of superabundance we are vastly overnourished. We tend to think that we should eat more and eat better, but it may be that the solution to our collective health and fitness dilemmas is to eat far less.
