name registration is such an obvious way to monetize decentralized/federated communication protocols you have to wonder how many times it's going to happen in the next few years for many i think it'd be tough to give up potential revenue to ENS (or in the future fnames) just because they got there a moment earlier

I think one hybrid structure which could achieve the best of both worlds (revenue/control for issuer + compatibility with ENS) is that services leverage ENS subdomains with special treatment in their product (+ fees, additional functionality)

apparently hot take: ENS is THE most widely adopted standard in web3, set up as a public good, decentralized enough, INSANELY openly composable via subdomains to any project or community. Subdomain registries can be/have been set up with their own fees and rules (see https://esf.tools) of all things to reinvent?

Web2: fight to keep you in my walled garden Web3: fight for you to use my building block username in other apps It's not perfect, but it's getting better!

Agreed, ENS is going to have many fast followers, the ecosystem will be super confusing for a bit, and then eventually the network effects winners will emerge in each ecosystem.

Good argument for why DIDs will probably sit at the top of the identity stack. One ID for many names

Same thing goes for new clients. What's to stop people from building new clients that ignore fnames and layer their own naming system on top?

Names have different meanings depending on their social context (gamer tags versus IG handles versus realID), so I suspect this namespace landgrab isn’t going to settle down with a winner-take-all.

it's going to be a constant push and pull between revenue and giving users' the most freedom. emergence of high-polish meta-protocols that bridge many others will gain the most users imo
