Hero IMO. Feel like the right never liked him (but the right was very different at that time). And the left decided to not like him anymore once he published the DNC emails

Forgot about that. Don't remember the details, but I feel like they didn't amount to anything? Regardless, the main issue is free speech of journalists, protection of whistle blowers, and the US attempting to imprison (or worse) a journalist outside of its jurisdiction. The death penalty was very much within the realm of possibility if this went a different way. And since he plead guilty, sets a precedent going forward for the US to continue going after whistleblowers and journalists
