What does "staff level" mean to you?

I know the definition that Google used internally but not sure what it meant for anyone else.

dont have a good sense for how’s it’s used within the industry but my own sense is someone that can be will almost always make good decisions 

- skill / experience in knowing what solutions pair well with what problems
- strong grasp of priorities and knowing where to invest resources
- can reason about an objective from the highest non technical level all the way to small technical details

in my head, to get something done well:

staff > explain a desired outcome or high level feature, minimal feedback
senior > give a product spec, moderate feedback
junior > hand a ticket, lots of feedback

backend eng; full-stack curious

writer, icon, retired rave queen

I suppose the definition depends on the org. I'm familiar with Google's IC classic definition (they changes things recently).

In short:

SWE (L4): Works independently but still doesn't contribute much to design. Low difficulty and impact.

Sr SWE (L5): Designs and implements systems independently. Moderate difficult and impact.

Staff SWE (L6): Sets the agenda, finds solutions to ambiguous problems. High difficulty and impact. (usually a Tech Lead)

Sr. Staff SWE (L7): Similar to L6 but has even larger business impact. (usually an uber Tech Lead)

Principal SWE (L8): Designed product/infra of core importance to the company and/or industry.

>L8: At this point you're usually leading large orgs or overseeing many projects. Rarely still an IC unless it's some deep tech stuff.

IIRC some key aspects of Staff level were the level of ambiguity, driving the agenda, and impact in terms of metrics and number of SWEs involved in some capacity (>100).

these are solid, never worked at an org that big but these make sense to me and don’t feel arbitrary
