should i keep making games just with no leaderboard? or is it fine to just let people cheat

any frames devs have tips on how to deal with people submitting fake scores when trying to build leaderboards?

one idea that doesn’t mitigate it directly but aligns things a bit is to require a small transaction to submit the leaderboard

that way cheaters at least have to pay you! could tie the required payment to how big high the score js

I think there's really only so much you can do, but I'm trying a few things.

Contracts are comprised of: tokens, and game logic. Tokens are permissive, no special controls. Other business logic will require an EIP712 signature from my Frame backend, passed to the client, to execute contract functions. anti-cheat detection will be implemented offchain, user EOAs/farcaster ids can be flagged as cheaters and the app won't issue signatures anymore to them, effectively banning them from the contracts.

I settled on sigs because then I can do complex business logic determining if an action is valid offchain in my backend and all the contract has to do is verify the signature to determine if they're allowed to do something.

I am a smart contract/dapp veteran but game anticheat is a new area for me so we'll see if it pays off. It's all software engineering "don't trust the client" stuff but I've never done it in context of a game, which is kind of next-level difficulty.

it's impossible to stop cheating regardless of games or platform. i think that's why it's important to try to "shrink" leaderboards. make them with friends/communities/groups to make them feel more fun.

i also like the idea of more pay to submit leaderboard entries

Definitely agree with transaction - it was surprising for me to see how many people were actually willing to pay (though cents) to get on the leaderboard.

Aside from that I think it can be an editorial decision. No one’s stopping bad actors from playing and minting, but the game can still hold the right not to display it

There's no shortcuts, game devs have had to deal with this forever by making almost everything round-trip to a backend server that simulates everything. Even then they slip up sometimes and you get a Warcraft cloning hack for a while.

introduce token or holding game-specific token, I think it worked well for apps like @clanker @anoncast etc

also, if you just want to be on leaderboard it's free, but to be eligible for rewards stake or hold

My lessons, let people cheat, until the community is complaining about it.

don't make a leaderboard, might be the only solution. Who wants a leaderboard?
