There is always room for cheaper alternates that don't take VC money but value the simplicity. My money is on a open source simpler, discord like org model. Don't think it exists yet.

apart from the pricing model, i think slack is pretty nice to run communities/teams etc. i tried discord at work and would still choose slack if given a option.

I have a dream of @converseapp or *something* on @xmtp to get to the point where it can challenge and overtake Slack. Until then, Element.io has been getting a lot cleaner. Definitely not quite there yet though. I actually think the monetization mechanics in Discord would play really nice with a Web3/XMTP client.
