Noticing jobs I applied for months ago are still open. How am I that awful of a candidate? Or they don’t actually need to hire people?

Companies may post just to build a pipeline of candidates with no intention of hiring. It is an unfortunate practice.

We notice lots of long-standing open vacancies in our DB as well.

So many of these aggregator boards don’t remove old postings either so even if the company closes their version it still floats around

There stand algorithms and people between you and a job. The gatekeeping happening there has rarely something to do with the value that you would provide. 

The thing is that recruiter and hiring managers have an idea that they pursue. There is a disconnect between that idea and your value. Don't worry about it.
