Serious question - where did the whole “NFTs are bad for the environment” come from? I remember the day like it was yesterday. Artists on Nifty Gateway getting roasted left and right. But what was the source?

+1 to all replies about it centering around Proof of Work. But like how did the message spread? Surely there were media campaigns (tweets, videos, articles) etc. I wanna figure out who was responsible for spreading the narrative and what resources popularized the concept

I think this video was kind of when it became a mainstream narrative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ_xWvX1n9g It was arguably true until PoS, but the people who were already inclined to hate crypto don't want to change their narrative. :(

I have a vague recollection of Tezos influencers pushing that narrative aggressively because their blockchain was PoS already. It’s probably that the source was either them or nearby.

I don’t have hard evidence but I feel like a lot of anti-crypto sentiment regularly circulates on Reddit in particular. There is something about that community that is truly allergic to crypto and refuses to change their mind.

NFTs made you rich and attractive to the opposite sex which would lead to babies which are bad for the environment

Tezos did a big campaign around it trying to promote their blockchain and launched “clean nfts” or whatever

Undoubtedly perpetuated by people in the left-leaning American media. Especially those who tend to despise rich people, tech people, take hardline stances on climate issues and/or are willing to argue in bad faith to promote an agenda 😕

It was largely coinciding during the time of ETH transition, so there were lot of vocal voices talking about POW ETH energy usage.

Started around the time Tesla dropped BTC payments over environmental concerns, iirc.
