Serious question - where did the whole “NFTs are bad for the environment” come from?

I remember the day like it was yesterday. 

Artists on Nifty Gateway getting roasted left and right.

But what was the source?

It was arguably true until PoS, but the people who were already inclined to hate crypto don't want to change their narrative. :(
