AMA with @colin starts now! Colin went to Waterloo and worked on a variety of projects there - most notably he was CTO of Yelplive & founder of BitIndy. He then worked on the payments team at Coinbase and moved over to Google where was was an eng manager for ~4 years. Now Colin is building @paragraph full time!

what's the #1 quality or skill an IC has to have in order to make the leap to leadership?

#1 quality or skill is probably understanding the bigger picture. Eg: - how does your work fit into broader company goals - can you articulate the importance of your work - are you working with the right teams/dependencies (eg not duplicating work!)

I've seen too many engineers be narrowly scoped to their day-to-day code. I think this is incorrect if you want to go into management. You should be constantly thinking more broadly and doing what you can to further your team's/company's goals, not just your own tasks. This may be a good future blogpost!
