How’s this not the biggest crypto unlock of the year? @base and Square need to partner up on this. Face ID -> NFC Tap -> Xfer USDC 2.75% saved for small merchants. Goodbye Visa. Goodbye networks. https://9to5mac.com/2024/08/14/apple-nfc-chip-iphone-ios-18-1/

Apple fan boy here, and I'm not too stoked on this after seeing apple increasing fees on patreon. Apple is in a weird position to increase profits with no new schemes except increasing fees on existing platform. Thumbs down.

the merchant pays the fees, but the customer chooses the payment method (which comes with fees). I don’t see customers changing their payment methods to save merchants fees. The country that has it figured out is australia: they charge the customer the fee and each merchant lists the fees per payment method

Consumers get 1-3% cash back when they use a credit card. And chargeback protection.

> Goodbye Visa I mean…merchants adopt payment methods that their customers want to transact with, and even saving the interchange (which is below 2.75%), many MANY customers will still prefer using Visa. If the only benefit is saving a few bucks (cents?), it’s not really worth it for customers IMHO. If it’s anonymous I could see it being more useful.

Because ultimately the merchant will save somewhere from 0.50% to 1.50% after finding parity with credit card rewards, which is nice, but requires a drop in solution, not new hardware, plus software to handle the reconciliation, tax and tip outs.

The fees for this wouldn’t allow us to take advantage of the cheap transactions crypto allows for, but it significantly increases the level of access for devs, consumers, everyone. I’m definitely looking at this for Gogh

Very unlikely, given that Square is actively building on the Lightning Network. Jack is a BTC maxi through and through. I do think he’s working on innovating something on-chain; however, I don’t think it will involve USDC or base.

Great building block for devs to use. USDC transfers on Base are the future (and currently gassless via Coinbase wallet).
