Hmm. I think if Bluesky drafting off DNS for verification as a weakness and blockchain based verification + global namespace as a strength but looks like in general using a blockchain even for an obviously clean and appropriate use requires 10x benefit to convince most people. 2x will not do.

On-chain naming service isn’t about solving verification problem, it is more about usability (shorter and flat namespace). DNS assists verification only because people uses it for other purposes. Btw, DNS is relatively decentralized as well.

Decentralization is always a matter of scale. Even if it is on-chain it isn’t necessarily more decentralized than DNS. Say, I would argue that DNS has a more decentralized governance than ENS.

It’s arguably less securely decentralized though, since it’s not cryptographically secured. In principle, nation states could take over the dns servers in their geography.

Note that the DID and not the DNS name is the fundamental identifier that is attached to your followers, posts etc. (domain has the DID in the TXT record) so if you’re following someone and their DID changes but their DNS name stays the same you should (not sure if you do right now) get a big warning in the app.
