To me it’s interesting to learn about the interplay between meditation / “self-improvement” / compassion  with technology

This is a really good point! I suspect Nick is stating that he observed this correlation within his friend groups, though I’m sure there are a lot of EA folks who do good and live normal lives as well.

Why would EA cause someone to experiment with drugs or dangerous sports..? Seems like a weird false equivalency.

It is indeed! So this is a thread that states the direct experience of someone who was involved in EA philosophy. It's currently "pitted" against e/acc from my observations though I am not sure if nuance between the two are lost in the zeitgeist.

I have to ask now cause I am out of the loop. What does ea stand for? I thought it was effective altruism?

It’s cool that you bring this up bc for the longest time I didn’t agree with Nick about his approach to meditation (sort of e/acc—aimed at improving protocols) whereas I was very staunchly traditionalist—let’s look into the suttas and figure out what the OG Buddha said

This (and so much more in the current hubub) is so totally fascinating. 

Tradition. Meditation lineages that don’t change (but work) have safe proven stability. 

BUT they don’t change and the world does. 

The frothy messy intersection in the emerging NOW is fascinating.
