My 11 yo has been watching videos about kidnap, suicide and a lap dancing hairdresser(!) on Snapchat and YouTube shorts. Any suggestions other than removing the apps entirely (she really likes them, and there is plenty of positive content she wants to watch, as well as chats with friends)?

My solution is quite restrictive, tbh. Netflix is okay, youtube only under supervision (the ads are very high on sugar) and no socials. Although I am thinking about FC and maybe insta. And we keep talking about things. Always speak about it. What did you see, how did it make you feel, what do you think about it.

Iโ€™d nudge her to be active on those platforms. Create her own content within boundaries you set (eg blurry face, not outside). Or things like weekly reports on what you watched a la news report. Removing them is a knee jerk reaction that only moves the problem

How does watching the content impact her? Is she watching them because everyone else watches them? Is she making her own videos (on whatever content she wants)? Kid#2&3 have a time limit for most apps & I know they have ways to circumvent some controls I put on it.

Id remove it, she does not understand, better be safe than sorry, that's what i do with my 4yo but he only sees youtube under supervision atm because the algo sometimes i feel it want to hurt kids! Snapchat for a 11yo? forbidden, nor tik tok, that's for adults!!!

If parents suppress their children's behavior, the children will likely act in secret from their parents. I think that's the most frightening thing.
