I am not sure what is right or wrong here, but this is how I tried to phrase it.

A system that allows anyone to occupy a position of power outside of the realm of society, attracts the lowest quality of character. It takes a particular person to be completely removed from reality, and once you drop out of the real world, you go looking for meaning in darker places elsewhere.

In other words, people without a real life and purpose got enabled to become the master of their own echo chamber, potentially leading people towards ever more incompetence. Because if they had not been intrinsically incompetent in the first place, they would not have taken on those self-reinforcing roles of doom.
