Hot take: Only EVM-equivalent rollups and systems built on them like app-specific chains are actually canon to Ethereum's rollup-centric roadmap scaling strategy. Making my case in an upcoming article. People may have the impression that this claim is made out of social allegiance, but there are clearly strong technical arguments for it, specifically guaranteeing lock-step synchronization of VM upgrades across rollups and Ethereum that truly realize USC

Here for the hot takes & see where you're coming from but imo the fact VMs can innovate while the L1 VM prioritizes security is one of the super powers of the rollup centric roadmap & I wish more VMs did innovate (excited for Georgios/Paradigms new client) Related 👇 vitalik.eth.limo/general/2024/05/23/l2exec.html

I agree that there are benefits just like you described but I feel their best place when it comes to scaling Ethereum truly will be at the L3 level (where it will be a fully contained experience upstream of the L2). It's not really about being anti alt-VM, it's about being the same as whatever form of execution the L1 has (whether it's EVM or not). Because users will potentially live on L2s, the technical spec needs to feel like Ethereum to qualify as a stronger form of a single domain. I ultimately see alt-VM rollups as L2s with extra security from L1, but not necessarily as "scaling rollups"
