Check out my latest article that goes deep into Ethereum rollups and critically assesses what it truly takes to transform a rollup into an actual scaling solution for Ethereum. It's time to crackdown on every rollup milking such messaging like "rollups scale Ethereum" because no, not every rollup does this - using Ethereum for DA does not earn you that classification. This isn't a game no more, piggybackers are going to be found out https://research.2077.xyz/the-practical-guide-to-ethereum-rollups

Heard we want more Jon Charb-like, long form articles in Ethereum except with more technical veracity. Have a read of my latest thoughts surrounding rollups and we should formally approach shaping them into optimal scaling solutions of Ethereum https://research.2077.xyz/the-practical-guide-to-ethereum-rollups

Excited to publish a big Ethereum rollups article I've been working on for the past month! Then it's time to prepare for Devcon travel 🫡

A sovereign Bitcoin rollup with a validating bridge to/from Ethereum to the rollup and inheriting the DA properties of Bitcoin. This is what we need to do, until we can make classic Bitcoin rollups a thing (I have faith we can straighten out the fuckstorm of Bitcoin). People may not get it, but we need one cryptoeconomic backbone built on PoW. The world would genuinely not be economically-ready for a Bitcoin that broke its irrational conservative boundaries

It means providing the best security and most programmable way to tap into it than any other piece of infrastructure in the world. It's time to move away from terminology that doesn't get this point across. People want a North Star? Here it is... The whole reason Ethereum was created was to provide people with a way to use the security of decentralized blockchains in any way that could computationally be expressed. The EVM was created to realize this vision by providing Turing-complete computational capabilities to allow anyone to customize what could be secured by robust and economically-sound decentralized consensus networks. Then everyone else saw the value of providing such a system and is trying to do it better with Ethereum. May the best network to bring this vision to reality win https://twitter.com/jon_charb/status/1849868823119397041

I feel like it would be way better if sovereign rollups classified themselves not by being able to enforce their FCR independently because classic rollups have the exact same capabilities. This social distinction thing isn't good enough for formal classification, the motivations driven by social goals need to manifest somewhere -- and for me that comes from looking at choices made around bridging. Sure there are other bells and whistles but the key distinction is whether bridging is baked into the architecture of the rollup. The only real functional difference at the technical foundations of these two rollup types is simply that classic rollups have a two-way, trust-minimized bridge (made possible through implementation of validating bridge contract on the L1 side), while sovereign rollups only have a 1-way, trust-minimized bridge.

Hot take: Only EVM-equivalent rollups and systems built on them like app-specific chains are actually canon to Ethereum's rollup-centric roadmap scaling strategy. Making my case in an upcoming article. People may have the impression that this claim is made out of social allegiance, but there are clearly strong technical arguments for it, specifically guaranteeing lock-step synchronization of VM upgrades across rollups and Ethereum that truly realize USC

The more I think about sovereign rollups the more I understand the LOGICAL arguments in favour of them. With our blockchain networks, one of our overarching goals is to build systems that are robust to complete capture by private parties (capture likely impossible to reverse if it happens). We have used cryptographic mechanisms and binding code to help achieve this goal - this is where our desires for ossifying and enshrining certain functionality derives from. But there is something extremely important to understand: The indiscriminate delivery of duties of code is in service of our goals around ensuring the resilience and robustness of these systems in maintaining decentralized control over them -- its simply one of many possible means to the ends we wish to make reality.
