But do web3 games even need a token if there's ETH/SOL/etc?? What are the benefits of a game-specific token? The only reason I can currently think of is immersion - I'd rather see WoW gold instead of ETH Real-world money break immersion

I definitely think they need tokens A game currency is way more palatable to a broader base of users I'm not yet fully convinced that token should have $value though, it's such a double edged sword There's definitely arguments for both My current ideal is - In game currency with no value to enable onchain activity - Game Assets that have value because people want them Players earn the currency to acquire the assets and then happen to make some money, crypto-pilled.

If the tokens were pegged the same way Vbux or WoW gold are, I would agree. Mostly, they are just a grift.

if the market structure of the game isn't the market structure of a native L1 token, it could complicate things a bit because you won't be able to change the mechanics of a L1 token ^^ That said, I think you'll attract more hardcore gamer with a L1 token reward ๐

We can talk about this during the podcast but I really think web3 games need to focus on building a game that ppl want to play and then maybe introduce a token. Too many games are focused on tokenomics first than a fun game

There must be a token, it fuels interest in the game
