I don't really think this is axiomatically true. Facebook doesn't really have a notable global namespace. 1:1 (friend) networks are likely fine without, I agree that 1:many (follow) networks pretty much require it.

Why have we not settled on DNS (+ ENS) as the de facto global namespace? Imho the one questionable design decision of Farcaster

And the namespace must be rooted in cryptography. AI is making it extremely difficult to differentiate between fake and real content. Our only hope is using cryptography to establish authorship of content. And our feeds should prioritize signed content.

I feel Reddit is a great model for the whole of web3 social. There are so many thriving communities and all are well shielded still discoverable. Move seamlessly in a global namespace with a globally verifiable karma.

Actually going off of the reputation tied to identity thing. You could actually build an on chain identity, then use zk proofs to bring parts or all of it with you in a federated social network. So I have an on chain resume let’s say I own x and y NFTs and have worked at so and so. Generate zk proofs and add to my b

Was actually thinking about something similar this morning: For true data portability you probably need global namespaces for *both* user *and* content identifiers (not necessarily the content itself). With those two things you could correctly relink both your identity and history when moving to a new server.

Agree 💯 It doesn’t (and shouldn’t) have to be real names, as long as proof of personhood can be verified. Exciting to see NFTs used to enable pseudonymity.
