i think it’s masterful distraction strategy that we’re discussing immigrants in Ohio eating pets as some abstract definition of racism instead of focusing on the *actual* issues caused by an unchecked border (national security and debt, employment, healthcare), and i think we’re all foolish to be falling for it.

It's hard to have nuanced conversations about immigration which is why Republicans tend to gravitate towards migrant crime or now migrant pet eating. People understand that. They don't understand that states are using emergency medicaid dollars within emergency rooms to provide care for undocumented individuals.

It’s been pretty front and center here in Massachusetts due to the costs in both the current and past fiscal year. Mostly from the right, including the herald. https://x.com/bostonherald/status/1776260077881585767?s=46&t=TVy9rDl3UkuxmVj4e18bOA Yet the globe has also covered it.

It's covered by the news but I don't think most voters read news articles anymore. They mostly get updates from fox or their local tv news outlets which don't go in depth on the topic.

A fair point, think the herald take was picked up a bit nationally via Fox etc, echoes of the vineyard migrant story. Yet depth and nuance isn’t in play.

Many of us don't have the capacity to understand the depth and nuance either. Especially when it's a lose/lose policy. Insurance for example. Yes, the use of emergency medicaid is expensive but the alternative is to deny care until proof of insurance is established. Often that can't happen quickly which could result in those having insurance being denied care. Also, those without insurance know that they'll receive care at the ER even if it's not an emergency. So, we see patients getting emergency care for colds or other non emergency illnesses. It would be cheaper to provide undocumented individuals with health insurance so they instead go to a walk-in clinic or receive preventative care. But we don't believe that health care is a right for legal residents let alone undocumented immigrants. I'm not sure how you'd have this type of discussion on the debate stage.

There’s a huge amount of good research & reporting on these issues. Haitians eating pets is a made up crisis that went viral online, where people consume content (ie ‘news’) When the base is voting with its attention for the racist immigration content, politicians will always meet that demand
