what's everyone take on House of the Dragon thus far? my own: a lot of yapping and not much character investment GOT got you really invested in the characters -- love them or hate them -- you still were invested in what happened to them

I liked how the rat catchers were allowed to walk unescorted through the castle where the king and his family live.

Overdid the grief / setup a little bit, writers feel slightly mixed up on who they are cheering for and it feels like Rhaenyra should be more front and center.. I expect and hope the pacing increases in E2.

Totally agreed. The lack of investment in the characters just don’t allow us to follow them and/or care for them as much as we did in GOT. It took me some good amount of episodes to finally begin to like one or another, but nothing like the character construction of GOT. I’m not sure I might have come kinda judgy to the tv show, coming from a terrible ending to a fantastic show that was GOT, but still…up until now I should be more interested in the characters and it truly isn’t the case.

It seems to be following the same formula as before, imo. They're laying the groundwork, setting the scene, and introducing the characters emotional states before moving forward. The difference is that we're more accustomed to this approach since GoT so it doesn't feel as groundbreaking and exciting as it once did.

Continuing: the groundbreaking killings and brutal decisions are no longer surprising. This trend is becoming more of an allegory than serving the narrative. We had only one scene with the children to quickly bond with them and evoke a deeper emotional response. Of course, it's still brutal to see a baby murdered, but in a world where we expect these things, it loses some impact without proper character development.

It was alright. Personally didn’t feel like it lived up to the 2 year wait but don’t see why some nice Dragon scenes later in the season compensate for all the yapping!

House of the Dragon lacks the character depth that made Game of Thrones so captivating. Viewers need more than just dragon CGI to stay engaged. Characters drive the story, not just the plot.
