what's everyone take on House of the Dragon thus far? my own: a lot of yapping and not much character investment GOT got you really invested in the characters -- love them or hate them -- you still were invested in what happened to them

It seems to be following the same formula as before, imo. They're laying the groundwork, setting the scene, and introducing the characters emotional states before moving forward. The difference is that we're more accustomed to this approach since GoT so it doesn't feel as groundbreaking and exciting as it once did.

This is very true. Back then we did not have a “GOT” to judge the show with. For HotD we do arrive with a pre-existing GOT, that surely changes our perception and expectations…
