twitter's sins: twitter committed many sins that hurt their ability to grow - maybe more so than the popular narratives. One particular problem was the high Gini coefficient where (a) certain people on the platform had huge followings (e.g being on the suggested list) (b) the algo rewarded them with more followers

this had two particularly evil side effects (1) new users would show up on the platform and go "oh there's no way I would ever get to 1m followers, let me give up" (2) new users would start emulating these popular users who were *not* modeling good behavior. and once a new user had a bad experience, that was that.
