2mos β€œimage” and expect but don’t cogitate or think discursively. I said β€œno”. Skimming the comments I think the yesses are equating thinking with mental activity more broadly, which is not crazy but also not especially helpful IMO

I don't know if it will really answer this question directly, it's kind of ambiguous because "thinking" isn't really well defined, but the book Brain Rules for Baby is really good at covering all the stages of a kid's brain development. https://a.co/d/2hIY78F

it's pretty difficult to argue that a 2 month old infant completely thinks, but let me try. there should be object tracking at short distance, sounds should startle, and aversion to open space (though again, that doesn't really sound like cognition). they're thinking helplessly.

They're definitely taking in a TON of information even though they can't do anything actionable with it since they're still a vegetable. But I watched my daughter reacting to a dream like 7 hours after she was born, so she was definitely processing thoughts to some extent.

I don’t really remember what my kids were like at 1 month vs 2 vs 3 per se, but definitely up until some point my sense was they’re not thinking. They’re a blob of senses and innate reactions.
