my disappointment w/ w3 social is in its unoriginality. yes, there's so much to learn from successful w2 platforms, but it's not enough to iterate on the business model. eg: -WC = X+ -Zora = IG+ is it too much to ask for innovation in both tech and UX? the former enables new possibilities for the later

I'm asking for innovation at the experience layer. There was a time when social apps created new ways for people to connect. W3 is w2 but monetized. Obviously the ownership and financial rails are part of the appeal, but the experience is otherwise a Frankensteined version of something that's already stale. I will continue to give flowers to Zora for innovating at the protocol layer

yeah i get the point, just wanted to mention that what we have is big already on the feature-innovation, i agree: - we need that snapchat/tiktok feature that made all platforms to copy/pasta - we need that uber or airbnb first experience - we need something we never saw before

I agree, that the infra is big, but it's disappointing that the most funded teams are mostly retreading ground at the app layer. Most successful social apps found their path via a single behavior that was new.

or they were just the first ones to fill the niche and then buy out all meaningful competition - meta, youtube etc. wouldnโ€™t be surprised if down a few years warpcast will be sold to meta or some other corp

you're also telling me youtube wasn't innovative? facebook was. ig was before it was bought. pinterest was. snapchat was. tik tok was. not to mention all the competitors in-between that were bought or copied

I mean, Iโ€™m pretty sure if youtube didnโ€™t exist today, weโ€™d have the same innovative tech company named something else and built by someone else all of those fill different needs substantial amount of people had so they have found their market these cases can and will surely happen again, but with amount of apps releasing every week in both w2 and w3, we can see how challenging it is, we only have how many successful apps like that and again, each one of them helps to solve a certain need, snapchat targeting friends, reddit targeting long form reply convos, youtube a recommendation engine for amateur video content, telegram - convenient messaging platform etc

and can probably see it in closed markets like china where facebook or instagram arenโ€™t a thing at all given all of the innovations maybe in software there isnโ€™t such thing as innovation especially now when you can just tell your replit ai agent what you want to copy from any existing or non existing app that you have in your mind

so it comes down to market and if youโ€™re the first one tomorrow if we have a network state for 1+ million people, I doubt theyโ€™ll use any of the big social media platforms we have now, will likely be a self developed thing or potentially farcaster

of course there is innovation in software. innovation is in experience. it's how something feels. it's how it makes you feel. wc feels soulless. the people made it fun but that didn't scale. i'll give zora massive credit for trying new things constantly. sparks and liquid secondaries are great examples, whether they work (now) or not
