Economist Alexei Zubets estimated in Russian media that one of the main benefits for Russia is that Western countries will “forget” about Ukraine when focusing on the trade war launched by the US. According to Zubets, the Ukrainian war ceased to be the focus of attention last Wednesday, when Trump announced new tariffs on almost all countries. “Everyone is interested in the US tariffs and their consequences for Europe, Asia and the whole world. No one is interested in Ukraine anymore and that's good,” Zubets commented to Gazeta(.)ru.

Oleg Savchenko, deputy chairman of the State Duma's Financial Market Committee and a Duma deputy, feels glee at the tariffs imposed by Trump. He said Russia knows what awaits the countries affected by the tariffs. “Russia has experienced all these difficulties because of sanctions. We are ready for any challenges, so we can sit with popcorn and see how this will end,” Savchenko told Gazeta(.)ru.

Investment analyst Aleksandr Razujev sees Russia's exemption from tariffs first and foremost as a sign of friendship. “It is friendly both to our country and personally to President Vladimir Putin.” Razuyev writes that tariffs raise the prices of all goods in the world, which also makes imports to Russia more expensive. He believes that Trump's tariffs will also have a negative impact on Russia's economy, even though it avoids tariffs, unlike 185 other countries. Razuyev predicts the trade war will lead to a global recession and lower oil prices, which will be detrimental to the Russian economy. But he is looking ahead.

“These are very interesting times. I believe that our country will play all its trump [hehe] cards and become a great superpower. And Trump will help that, but it won't happen until all the dead and wounded as a result of his policies are removed.” For his part, economist Mikhail Belyayev told the Regnum news website that US tariffs will force European countries to turn towards Russia. Competition in the Chinese market is so fierce that, according to Mr Beliaev, Europeans will not be able to survive unless they redirect their trade eastwards.
