We have major news networks pushing it and sophisticated algorithms driving it for more than 10 yrs. I’d say it’s pretty sophisticated and will only become more so with AI.

The point is that it isn't very sophisticated on the level of content, or at least it’s not sophisticated when it’s reduced to a limited, well-known core. The machinery spreading it is indeed fine-tuned. That’s precisely the problem here: what happens when not only the algorithm is very effective, but also the message is so refined that even the most reasonable people will fall for it? You could argue it’s already happening, but I think it still can be remedied.

I think we're already there. The swiftness with which educated, mostly reasonable people decide, say, that universities should be abolished, is astonishing. They buy whatever's being sold without much thought at all.
