what's some programming advice that's considered common sense or that you hear often, but is actually bad advice?

“Don’t ask for help; use Google” “Adhering to a style guide is necessary when working in industry” (actual “advice” from professors in my computer science program 🙄)

My interpretation: it’s bad relative to the value of asking a human who knows the code and will provide extra context along with the basic information requested.

As a homework assignment I was tasked to reduce the install time of a Linux kernel to 30-40 minutes by modifying config files. The professor’s only instructions were “use Google.” I wasted many days trying random commands I found on StackOverflow, hoping one would work with the Linux environment he provided.
