what's some programming advice that's considered common sense or that you hear often, but is actually bad advice?

As a homework assignment I was tasked to reduce the install time of a Linux kernel to 30-40 minutes by modifying config files. The professorâs only instructions were âuse Google.â I wasted many days trying random commands I found on StackOverflow, hoping one would work with the Linux environment he provided.

I complained to him over email and he just responded, âYou really need to narrow your google searches.â Waste of my time and tuition. Googling stuff is a good skill, but having an experienced person around who is willing to help you is a much better use of time.
