Dwelling upon Moloch’s grasp on mankind caused the following weird thought experiment to pop up in my head. If every adult was handed a device with a big red button capable of ending humanity, how soon would someone press it? Then I realized the answer is probably, and depressingly, “right away”. The radical millenarianists, the psychopaths, the pathologically disassociated, anyone tripping balls, plus a few edgelords cosplaying as The Joker would all compete for the title. So a better question is: what percentage of people would press the button?

And of course, in Moloch style, the button can be seen as our collective inaction in the face of existential threats (climate change, etc). By refusing to act, we’re pressing the metaphorical button, only the device has a delayed action

Take whatever percentage of the population has severe impulse control problems, triple that, then add another 90 percent and you're close to the truth. A decision of that scale is incomprehensible to humans. Every single one of them will get angry enough at some point in their life to push it. Everyone. My answer is everyone lol

If we’re not headed to The Great Filter, it seems inevitable to me that we have to create a panopticon of surveillance because technology makes that button cheaper and more accessible every year. Tbh this is a primary reason I’m in crypto. Seems like it offers the only path to keeping the panopticon democratic.

it’s both unsettling and revealing about human nature. maybe the real question is, what would it take for people to hesitate or even refuse to press the button? a deeper sense of connection, purpose, or hope perhaps? curious to hear your thoughts on how we can cultivate that in today’s world

I'm going to be on the positive side of things. Surviving is in our genes. It is what has got us here, so a button that will delete everything is something that someone will ponder quite enough before pressing the button. Yes, there will be people who will be willing to do it, but a lot will not. The main issue with this paradigm is that nowadays, people are not able to distinguish what's true and what's false. For this reason, I think a lot of people will press the button because they will not believe that it will kill everyone on Earth. This, we may need to add a condition that the person fully understands the implications of pressing the button. Under these circumstances, I guess only a low percentage will press the button because everyone will understand that there's no plan b to press the button.
