The more people that want access to a scarce resource — the doctor’s time — the longer the line will be An easy way to make the line shorter is to get rid of avoidable visits — when people show up to the doctor and take their time, but didn’t actually need it In this study, “expert patients” — those trained as doctors and nurses — were looked at to see if they use less healthcare. And they do! Primarily for conditions that need a prescription — the practitioner just self prescribes Suggests that telemedicine and AI type providers can help reduce healthcare utilization through avoidable visits by letting people just get the dang antibiotics: for their UTI, or step throat (+rapid test), their asthma meds, eczema, migraines, cold sores.
