Trump is so good at reducing government bloat he has to create two brand new departments (DOGE and now this) to do things that have already been done through existing government functions/agencies.

To expand my thoughts further, finding efficiency in *discretionary spending* (which is only ~1/3 of the annual budget), is a complicated task that requires intimate knowledge of government functions and agencies. Do I think DOGE can achieve some savings? Sure, but likely in a much less efficient manner than could be achieved by spending resources improving and empowering the GAO and it's members who will have the expertise needed to actually find the savings opportunities.

this is a helpful and informed perspective, thank you! my questions were asked in earnest, I was not familiar with the GAO. I think the DOGE initiative is likely more about installing new staff that is loyal to Trump, which he perceives as central to his policy goals.
