To expand my thoughts further, finding efficiency in *discretionary spending* (which is only ~1/3 of the annual budget), is a complicated task that requires intimate knowledge of government functions and agencies. 

Do I think DOGE can achieve some savings? Sure, but likely in a much less efficient manner than could be achieved by spending resources improving and empowering the GAO and it's members who will have the expertise needed to actually find the savings opportunities.
