I still don’t really understand channels.

Should I default to using one? Only if it’s super relevant? 

Is it a way to reach new people? Or to narrow who among your audience it hits?

questions like this make me think i should just sit down and write a "how to use farcaster" guide 

it's not obvious, and there's a lot of info, but it's straightforward to play the game here and i think people would benefit

There are some things. I did about 5 vids titled Farcaster for Poets. But I also believe @gmfarcaster was doing something to help new people get started.

I think it could be very helpful for retention, because the ones I see drop off are the ones who are doing FC like they would do FB or X. Somehow, that simply doesn't work.
