What's considered readable changed so much - everything was handwritten back then, people would find modern typography illegible

Pushing 34579 down and 68 up is terrible. The readability inside a math equation would be awful

the official reason really is legibility, but it's partly personal taste - keep in mind this stuff was *hand-carved* out of metal, it's hard to overstate the weight of tradition and authorship in this craft
