Portrait of Natasha, a 42-year-old mother of three from Kyiv, Ukraine.
I had the privilege of meeting Natasha and photographing her in Germany in October 2022, where, among millions of other war refugees, her family had found temporary refuge after fleeing their war-torn homeland. The atmospheric conditions mirrored Natasha's state of mind, with the autumnal weather and encroaching chill poignantly echoing her sense of drifting, uncertainty, and profound loss.
Much like a solitary leaf in autumn, she appeared to be adrift without a clear destination in sight. The fragility of her shoulders bore witness to the heavy burden of uncertainty and the struggle to find stable ground. This portrait encapsulates the frozen stillness often associated with post-traumatic experiences, hinting at the possibility of lifelong trauma and an enduring sensation of emotional numbness.
