Most common mistake is doing too much too soon. Ramp up your mileage gradually. Keep in mind that recovery is just as much a part of training as your actual runs. Doing non-running/impact activities will help too, whether it's biking, swimming, etc.

I've been gradually preparing for my first marathon. What tips do you have for avoiding injury as you start to tackle those longer distances?

Great question! Let me think about this, and put together a list.

What would be a good, scenic first ultra to do, ideally in the western US, in the 50k to 50 mile range?

Wear/use the proper clothing/shoes/socks to eliminate friction which would cause the chafing/blisters. Lubes/creams are temporary solutions - may be fine short-term, or if you continue applying, which isn't practical for longer distances.

Realized I couldn't get much faster without putting in more effort than I wanted to (=pain), and was better at going farther at a slower pace instead. Also you have more opportunities to see beautiful places, since most are held on trails in locations you typically wouldn't (or can't) access other than by foot.
