E-Sim works, too. Dongles nice because it’s always on & you don’t need to manage hot spotting multiple devices via your phone, but the main thing is just making sure you’ve got connection.

One last tip - rent a pocket wifi dongle for the week. Best way to ensure your phone has connection for Google Maps, etc. You can reserve them ahead of time, pick them up at the airport, and drop them off when you depart. Will try to find the provider I went with last time I was there, but there are many.

Don't overthink it. With regard to getting around; Google Maps will be your best friend, English signage is prevalent, and the Google Translate photo/image thingy will take you far.

You'll meet some incredibly friendly people, and you'll also inevitably be discriminated against. Learning basics won't prevent the latter, but they'll enhance your interactions with the former. Putting 2-3 hours of time into watching some YouTube videos to pick up hello/goodbye/thank you is all you'll need this time.

Just visit often - have considered the move over, and haven't ruled it out, but some stars would have to align, and I've heard it can be isolating. That said, I'd still love to spend a few years there.

Save it for next time. More than enough for you to do between Tokyo + the Aman resort. You'll walk away from the Kyoto day trip exhausted and wishing you had more time to spend there, imo. You'll be back :D

Agreed with others, though, that Tokyo + Kyoto may feel rushed in 7 days. You could spend a month in Tokyo and probably not get bored. Best advice I could give you is to extend the trip to 9-10 days :D You could also spend a night in a coastal town like Atami and enjoy the hotsprings / onsens there.

If you're into cooking knives, don't miss Aritsugu in the Nishiki Market. They've been making blades for over 400 years, and used to supply swords for the Imperial House of Japan.

If you make it to Kyoto, you have a lovely half-day in Arashiyama. Put your name down in the morning for a spot at Steak Otsuka. Explore the Bamboo forest and proximate Unesco world heritage sites until it's your time to have some of the best beef you'll ever taste.
