If they hadn't, we might never have heard of Bill Gates.

So in the 12th century a Song emperor had to pay a nomad warlord in the north 100k “taels” of silver and 200k bolts of silk a year. He fomented revolt by a vassal warlord to main warlord to take him down. But new guy’s clan took over more territory and the capital and drove the Songs south and they then had to pay 200k taels, 250k bolts of silk. On a shrunken territory/tax base. Moral of the story. I don’t know. I’m not sure there’s one. Be a warlord rather than a Song emperor? The history of China appears to be a history of paying off warlords who then kept coming back for more.

Chris Paik on incentives, capital, systems, and power: "The world has two sides: a for-profit world and a non-profit world. There are entities that are trying to drive profits, and there are entities that are not trying to drive profits (governments, religions). For-profit companies are really good at pushing the world to the way that it will be. They are very bad at being paternalistic. They’ll give people exactly what they want. The non-profit side is really good at pushing the world into how it should be. It’s really good at being paternalistic. We as individual actors depend on the systems to imbue society with paternalism."

The Ukrainian army said four people were killed and dozens - many of them elderly - were injured in the town of Sudzha in the Kursk region, which has been under Ukrainian control for five months.

Don’t know who needs to hear this, but I highly recommend setting up a catch-all email domain and an email alias service like AnonAddy or SimpleLogin (which comes bundled with a Proton Mail plan).
