Is there any reason we're calling it sign in with ethereum rather than sign in with insert-asymmetric-key-encryption-algorithm? Technically you're signing in with an ECDSA key-pair that just so happens to be used by Ethereum. You could swap ECDSA for any asymmetric key algorithm.

That is not an argument in favor of “sign in with ethereum”.

Call it “sign in with device” for example. The point here is that SIWE has nothing to do with ethereum. 

It needs to be conceptualized from first principles, not tacked on to ethereum.

Takes like these completely ignore that we should aim to onboard non-technical people

Copy is a huge part of UX enabling that

Or some sort of generic name like “Sign in with web3”

UX, people don't know what ECDSA is, they know what Ethereum is

The goal should be to improve UX rather than call out every component of the tech stack.  It’s about the network not the specific encryption mechanism…
