The fractions of difference between being the best in the world and missing out on medals, or competitions entirely, at elite level sports fascinates me. As does the dedication needed to get there. Built different is a phrase that often comes to mind.

so true! even the nation you are from makes so much difference, you could be 4th best in the world but if you’re also the 4th best in your nation its unlikely you’ll represent them at global championships as there’s only 3 spots per nation. its a mix of hard work, talent, luck and an almost delusional amount of self belief. and those fine margins mean all the hard work could be for nothing in return but the unshakable idea that it could all work out is so powerful and makes it so hard to want to give up!!

Hadn't thought of the lack of spots per nation and it's a really good point. That drive to be the best in your chosen discipline must be all the more difficult to ignore the closer you get to the top too. I've got huge admiration for anyone who dedicates themselves so wholeheartedly to their dreams.
