1Password vs iCloud (with and without ADP)... preference? I assume iCloud is more convenient but is 1pass actually more secure?

I don’t disagree about the closed source point, but what would you have expected Apple to do in this case? simply refuse? how would that go?

Correct. Apple is not in the position to care about your privacy or security as a public company. This is why it's great users now have more options than ever before to incrementally improve their security, privacy, and ownership of digital accounts, data, and money.

“care” is the wrong word here. it’s a company. they “care” about selling products, and to do that customers need to trust them. so yes, i would expect them to make the most rational choice that protects users’ privacy and security, as they did in the instance you mentioned.
