I personally think "own/control your own data" being the punchline for most web3 products is at best extremely weak esp. when facing consumers. Consumers don't tend to optimize for "safety" when they are looking for fun. It's rarely ever the primary hook.

I don’t think that data autonomy is only about safety. It’d be fun af to leverage the full power of your Instagram data and social graph on BeReal or Hinge. To take your YouTube views history to Twitch. Your music taste on Spotify to Ticketmaster. Currently these platforms are walled gardens and you don’t have

As pointed out by dwr.. consumers don't care because for most of them their data is not valuable. But for devs and creators, their data is much more important. So it's again a matter of who is the target audience..

I think core value proposition will be the unique experiences that devs build on top of FC . Why devs build ? Cause FC is open and solving the cold start problem by doing the hard work of curating initial community so that other devs need not to.

agreed, most consumers only change habits after something actually goes wrong for them or someone they relate to. not to preemptively to reduce risk have you seen good hooks for web3? government imposed capital controls on collapsing currencies seems to do it

average consumers prob won’t care but large creators who’s entire livelihood depend on a social app do. the fear of getting banned on Twitter or twitch or YouTube and having your income immediately cut off is very real. and average consumers will go where their fav creators go

Yeah think this only is an ok selling point for bigger creators that might be scared of getting kicked out if the algorithm and want to retain their audience

Agreed. What does it even mean to own your data? I shared it with the world. Now it's everyone's. I post on FC and I post on Twitter. My ownership of my data is the same.

I don't know if a majority will ever care about "owning" data but a sizeable minority already do. I thing the mainstream still considers data "unowneable" or unworthy to worry about. Gamers get the idea of owning digital stuff though.

Agreed...it will only work if owning your own data enables better web experiences. I'm optimistic that will eventually be the case

Humans are inherently lazy, they seek the path of least resistance. Optimise for this, a classic case of "don't make me think".

I think most of the concepts that pushed crypto and web3 forward in the last decade aren't palatable to the average consumer. For that matter, most of the concepts of web2 aren't even known to the average consumer. The fallacy is assuming philosophy drives user behavior. User experience is supreme.

Owning your data and getting paid for its usage in targeted marketing might be a better hook. e.g., an open Google ad auction marketplace where you can choose to participate and get paid directly for the data you provide.

The web3 “own your data” model is really just switching the cost burden from third party advertisers monetizing consumers attention, directly to consumers themselves. (1/2)
