Annie Proulx’s book titled Close Range: Wyoming Stories is a great collection. The opening story β€œThe Half Skinned Steer” is one of my all time favorites. Be forewarned though if you embarkβ€”it’s a little dark.

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells is a series of stories and novellas/novelettes (I forget the difference). One short novel in there somewhere. β€œMurderbot” is a great character. Highly recommend.

The Refugees - Viet Thanh Nguyen is a collection of beautiful shorts centered around the theme of immigration to dip in and out of. Also love shorts by Shirley Jackson (you might have heard of The Lottery already) for something spooky!
