The fact that we talk about parents “sacrificing” their careers for their children, but never say a parent is “sacrificing” their children for their career, says a lot about post modern American society.

Right after mat leave, I hired an assistant to help me with my work. Sometimes I wonder why it’s acceptable to pay for a nanny so we can work more but won’t make the same justifications for hiring an assistant so we can spend more time with our kids

Parents/adults are also sacrificing their retirements so kids can go to super expensive schools as early as PreK.

Absolutely, perspectives on this matter indeed resemble the Rubin Vase scenario. Younger or less established professionals may perceive it distinctively compared to those further along in their careers, seeking growth from alternative avenues.

The first one have short term consequences, so you notice more. The latter have much more long term consequences and they are blind (os not will to see) them until it’s too late.
