Collocating the toilet with the shower and sink has to be one of the great design tragedies of the west. All shower, sink and toilet have high contention for long periods and the toilet leaves behind smells. In Japan the toilet is in a separate and often tiny room. Top of the toilet doubles as a sink too, the water coming in to the tank flows through a tap and drains into the chamber.

“Throw the towels on the floor when you want them replaced.” “Leave the spent food outside on the floor and we’ll pick it up.” We need more guilty pleasure ux.

Interesting design space having it work entirely on the client. A few things zeroing in on the robotic process automation (RPA) which is fragile and slow.

AT THE BAGGAGE CLAIM If everyone stood back further everyone would be able to see their bags. But one person steps forward, so others must too, and the cycle repeats. As you get closer the circumference gets smaller and field of view gets narrower, so fewer people fit and they see less. Which means people move forward faster as they get closer. Tough system.

We had a lot of microservices at my last gig. It wasn't uncommon to touch 8 repos in a single day. At one point I realized I can just open the entire parent directory in vscode and fuzzy search across it like a monorepo. Worked pretty well.

TIL about meshtastic from @roman, an open source off grid comms platform you can run on low power cheap devices like this. it can transmit a few kb/s up to 300km away, all in a mesh style network. They go for about $50. seems like people mostly use for text messages and gps, there’s apps for all devices with group chat support.

caught up with a friend who’s “getting as far away from tech as possible” and looking at acquiring a torch business, gas station, or metal roofing company. “…I’m terrified of ai” First real account of someone I know actioning on ai like that.
