for ex: compare the cognitive load using self checkout vs ordering from a human

the latter is far easier – declarative and direct, zero eye hand coordination or ui to understand

it can even be superhuman ux, because you don’t have to deal with the social norms and pleasantries required.

a lot of our voice interactions are skeuomorphic that way.

for example, the above can state payment method immediately, no pause, no upsells etc. likewise when I want weather with Siri, I say “weather”. A timer, “30m timer”.

Good compression. Superhuman ux.

how do you use it inside?

My number one use is walking and talking to gpt atm, 5-35m a day.

they’d be more efficient and less tedious but efficiency isn’t always the goal.

some interactions are more transactional in nature though, like ordering at a fast food restaurant or a very busy cafe.

I’ve worked the latter and it can feel alienating going through the same menu of questions with each customer.

nah, I was on the train, short text has formatting and style quite different from voice so not sure it’d pan out.

I’d love to use wispr more but I haven’t had a private workspace for the last year.

simple stand outs are commands with Siri:
“30m timer”
“weather.”
“navigate to McDonald’s on 3rd”
“5am alarm”

very efficient commands compared to even opening optimized apps, but speech to text has to be very accurate and historically it’s been spotty, the last couple years there’s been a step change.

(I don’t mention chatgpt voice here cuz it feels less ux and more like a new unlock in natural conversation, I am using it about 5-35m a day tho for last 6mo)

Think the UX far superior than voice is mind reading, something like neural link.

Voice takes a lot of energy and has friction in many use cases.

Cannot wait for the day, when that tech becomes accessible.

Another great one, I use reminders all the time.

90% of my interactions with my Apple Watch are putting it near my face and saying

"Remind me to ___"

I could probably do even more if I set up some shortcuts. But I'm a huge fan of the hands free UI. Smart displays as well.

I'm already dictating most of my prompts for code and messages so i totally agree. siri hurry up.
