Khabib and three other fighters from his gym have a combined record of 91 wins and 1 loss. When asked how to describe this, his answer was one word: _sacrifice_ "If you want to be best in the world, sacrifice your time, sacrifice your health, sacrifice everything you have." timestamped: https://youtu.be/tWDYmXh-lvA?si=WWwMyABts2V5kfeS&t=384

this is very obvious to people who've done sports competitively, even if not at khabib's level - you just don't get better without focusing and that becomes clearer the better you get and i think this is even harder for people to understand today when many do sports as a hobby and try to position their activities as "passions" or "personal achievements"; prolly not a popular opinion but sports are for winning

I don’t think the extent of sacrifice of the truly elite is obvious to most, even among professionals. There’s the “I’m missing my child’s birth to launch the rocket” level of sacrifice that’s just wild.

Jannik Sinner left his parents house at 13yo to go living 400km away and attend a tennis school. he basically sacrificed his entire puberty and social life to become a pro tennis player.
