If I understand this correctly, disagree. If their current self is 10 (arbitrary number of goodness) and the other person is 1000, maybe they can spend their whole life becoming 20 but still not be 1000.

i don't think you understood. he is not saying that you can be better than x arbitrary person. He's just saying that if you can't compare yourself to someone else in terms of goodness, then you also can't demonstrate improvement (i.e. increase your own goodness) since you wouldn't be able to compare your future self's goodness to your current
