a little story

since joining farcaster in jan 2023, this has been a place where i feel free to be myself

i’ve made countless friends, had countless thoughtful discussions, shared hundreds of photos from nomadic travels, explored new apps, learned from the brightest minds in the world, and much more

when i first joined here, it was a smaller community, but the culture was similar to today - open, authentic, optimistic, friendly

i thought of fc as a place to share things i may not share on other apps, one of those things was my photos - taken on my iphone lol. every now and then sharing would lead to awesome conversations

i’ve never thought of myself as a professional, but i love capturing moments around the world, and as the photography community grew here i felt a sense of belonging even w some of the very best photographers in the world

today i got my first camera, and i can’t wait to continue sharing photos on the superchain, where ownership is at the forefront

Geopolitics

The pandemic was the period during which I became fully "orange-pilled" about cryptocurrency and blockchains. I had already had baseline familiarity from working on the Edward Snowden NSA document stories (Snowden is a Bitcoin fan) but seeing the way in which decentralized finance ran circles around Wall Street through Reddit channels sent me down a rabbit hole of curiosity. I binged on books including "The Age of Cryptocurrency" by Michael Casey among many others. I also discovered @balajis.eth podcasts and he was also a great resource in taking the time to chat with me about the technology and becoming someone to bounce ideas around with.

Crypto has a ways to go but as someone who has benefitted immensely from the internet I do believe in the promise of decentralized networks, finance, and organizations. Among journalists I'm a bit of an outlier (though I'm not alone) but I wrote a manifesto summarizing my views on the matter sometime back: https://mazmhussain.substack.com/p/what-bitcoin-and-crypto-are-for

Murtaza wrote about how cryptocurrency solved a problem that wasn’t theoretical for him: how to send money home.

(I almost feel we take that for granted now in the community, as stablecoins work so well, but it’s still a huge win over the legacy system.)

Last time for a while on PWAs: they don't work for consumer DAU products.

They are a fig leaf attempt by Apple to give system-level notifications to websites.

Yes, you don't have App Store restrictions, but the revealed preferences of consumers is they don't want the browser lag.

No, an "MVP PWA" is not going to tell you much. Consumer DAU products need at least 30 days before you know they are working.

Use at your own peril.
